Chapter III: Their First Week
(Day 2- Day 7)

January 16, 2007
(Day Four)

The city of Austin has shut down due to the ice storm. Thankfully, we kept our power. We're expecting anything from freezing rain to 4" of snow tonight depending on who is doing the weather reporting.

The puppies are all nursing well and are getting pretty vocal.  It's surprising how fast they grow and change.  The girls gained about 4oz today while Slick (i have got to come up with his call name -- already narrowed down his registered name) gained 1.5 oz.   We did our second day of the early stimulation protocol today. Yesterday, they just seemed to tolerate it well but today there was a bit of screaming from all the puppies.  Probably because they were nice and toasty and with their mom and I woke them up. Cider still isn't eating well. We have to force feed her ice cream and everything else. She's obsessed with the babies.  Getting her out of the whelping box is a challenge because she doesn't want to leave and when we do get her out of the room for her breaks, all she does is stand outside the whelping room waiting for us to let her in.  She's a much better mom than I thought -- but still way too good for cleaning.

First day of American Idol auditions -- Jamal thankfully took the 7-9pm shift so we could watch it.  He doesn't care -- he plays on-line poker while in the whelping box with Cider and the babies.  He gets the same shift again tomorrow for Day 2 of Idol auditions :-)
